The enrolment process

Being an Ionian means becoming part of a community for life. If this is an opportunity you would like for your son and your family, complete the online ‘Enrolment Application Form’. A non-refundable application fee is payable at this time.

After the closing date each year, applications will be assessed and the enrolment process will progress with an invitation to an interview.

Once the enrolment meetings are complete, the first round of offers will be sent to families, with a reasonable timeframe to accept or decline the offer of enrolment at Iona.

If you accept this offer, a non-refundable Confirmation Fee and Enrolment Contract will need to be lodged to formalise your enrolment.

Health and Safety and Privacy

The safety of everyone who visits Iona is always our top priority, so we ask families who may be joining us for a tour, Open Day or one of our many other events to ensure adults and children always wear appropriate footwear.

Positioned on Iona Hill, the College has many areas where surfaces may be steep or uneven, or needing to be accessed by stairs.

If you require access for a pram or wheelchair while on a tour, please contact the College Registrar two days before your arrival to discuss your requirements.

Due to privacy protections, no photographs or videos are permitted to be taken of any Iona College students, staff, facilities or grounds whilst on the College tour.

Open Day

Open Day is one of the biggest days on the Iona calendar, and one of the most-loved here at the College because we get to throw open the doors and share all the great experiences that come with being an Ionian.

Every year, more than 1500 future Ionians from schools around our community come to explore the campus and all of the wonderful opportunities that await them from Year 5 at Iona.

Thanks to our staff and our student tour guides, families from our local community schools explore Iona as the next step in the educational journey for their sons with a close-up look at The Provence Centre, Zinelli Primary Building, Aeronautics laboratories, Marine science laboratories, Chapel, Arts Precinct, Performing Arts Centre – and more!

Our visitors will meet our College Principal and members of our Iona Leadership Team, interact with students in their classrooms and participate in the interactive displays.

Additional enrolment information and assistance will be available from our Enrolments Team.

But the Iona College Open Day is not just for students and families thinking about joining our community. There is also a world of opportunity for teachers and other professional staff to become an Ionian, and become part of something bigger.

Working at Iona is more than a job. It is the opportunity to connect to your higher purpose and mission, and be embraced and connected to a community of like-minded professionals engaged to contribute to something bigger than themselves.

You will be working in state-of-the-art facilities at a world-class campus, enjoy a range of employee benefits, and be embraced by a connected and engaged community that shares your passion and values.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the intake years at Iona?

Our formal intake years are Year 5 and Year 7. Entry into other year levels is subject to availability at the time of enquiry.

When should I submit an enrolment application for my son?

Iona College invites enrolment applications to be submitted approximately 18 months prior to preferred entry year. Strict closing dates apply.

What if I would like to enrol my son into a non-intake year?

Entry into non-intake years is subject to availability. Waiting lists apply, and are always under review as vacancies arise.

Does submitting an enrolment application guarantee my son a place at Iona?

No. A position at the College is not guaranteed until an enrolment offer has been made and accepted by you to confirm his place. All families who submit an enrolment application before the relevant closing date will be invited to an enrolment interview with their son to discuss his suitability for Iona.

What are my chances of receiving an offer of a place?

We always do our best to accommodate all families who genuinely want to be a part of the Iona community, but we often have more applicants than we have places to offer, so cannot guarantee positions. Once first-round offers have been finalised, a second round of offers may be made. If you are unsuccessful in receiving an offer, our Registrar Ms Julia Christensen will explain your waiting-list options.

What are the class sizes at Iona?

Primary classes have a maximum of 30 students per class. Our Secondary class sizes depend on the cohort size, subject selections and timetabling.

What are the co-curricular opportunities at Iona?

Iona College has a vast variety of co-curricular opportunities. Together with our 69-acre campus and world-class facilities, resources, coaching and mentoring for the arts, music and sport, Iona students have everything they need to pursue their passions – or discover a new one.

Explore all of Iona’s co-curricular opportunities.

What are Iona’s public transport options?

Iona College is fortunate to be located beside Lindum Train Station on the Cleveland line. In 2024, Lindum Station underwent a multi-million-dollar accessibility upgrade, delivering a safer and modern facility for our community.

Students who travel by rail access the College by Iona’s dedicated train path which directly connects the school and station, and removes the need for students to walk on public footpaths – increasing their safety.

School bus services connecting the College to our surrounding suburbs run before and after school, with drop-off and collection points off North Rd at the dedicated bus turnaround. Families should go to the Translink website for details on the best bus service for your location.

What makes Iona different to other schools?

All members of our community are embraced as ‘Ionians’. This is not a term exclusive to the students who attend, but includes the parents, grandparents, siblings, carers or any other loved ones who contribute positively to our community.

Being an Ionian is about being part of a community for life. Our College was built by our community, for our community -and that connection with our local area and the people who call it home is the driving force behind everything we do.

Our College is built on spirit, tradition and a sense of belonging. We promote compassion and empathy for others and an awareness that extends beyond our own community.

An example of this is our 3:16 Catholic Studies program, which includes regularly taking students to Hemmant Cemetery to clean untended gravestones and tidy the grounds to maintain it as a place of peace, reflection, respect and remembrance.

It is also an opportunity for our current Ionians to hear some of the stories of, and pray for, our former students who were laid to rest there – deepening the connection of our boys to the community they serve as they follow the Oblate mission.

This is at the heart of what it means to be Ionian – creating a better world for the people of our community, and creating better young men at the same time.

Does my son need to be a Catholic to enrol at Iona?

Iona College accepts enrolment applications for boys of all religious faith backgrounds, and has an inclusive faith model.

The College expects that all students and their families willingly support the Catholic faith ethos, Religious Education, values and Oblate missions of the College. All students are expected to attend regular Chapel services, Liturgies and Mass.

Attendance at some of these is compulsory and the student’s participation needs to be respectful and courteous at all times.

Are all of your teachers Catholic?

The majority of our staff identify themselves as Christian, and all staff are required to be supportive of the Catholic faith ethos of the College.

Does Iona College accept International students?

Iona College is not CRICOS-registered, and unable to enrol International Students.

Does Iona College offer Scholarships?

Our College was built and has grown by generations of hard-working and respectful families, who wanted to contribute to building something great.

Iona College’s fee structure is modest, and our culture is built on remembering our working-class heritage, and ensuring an Iona education is not denied to any family who seeks it because of financial hardship. Out of respect for those who contribute so much to be a part of Iona, we do not offer scholarships for entry.
